Journalism for Liberation

Journalism is a key component of transformative social change. How can we build support and infrastructure for movement journalism?

At AMC2018, more than 300 people gathered for the movement journalism track. From that, Press On (formerly the Southern Center for Movement Journalism) was created and has since launched several southern-based initiatives, and a national training program advancing a vision for organizing to transform journalism. At AMC2020 we will continue the work that began two years ago — drawing on the strong interest from movement journalists to gather, share resources, and develop collective ideas and ethics.

The Journalism for Liberation Network Gathering, hosted by Press On and Migrant Roots Media, will bring together journalists, media organizations, and media activists focused on transforming journalism toward liberation, following on the work of the movement journalism track at AMC2018. The gathering will focus on southern and midwestern movement journalists and outlets, and will start with a full-day Press On training, grounded in southern Black liberation movements. The training pushes people in the field of journalism to think beyond diversity and delve into the systems of power and oppression that shape newsrooms and the communities they cover. On the second day, participants will share resources and wisdom, and discuss ethics and best practices for movement journalism. We’ll strategize together about building a network of movement journalists who support each other and leave with concrete next steps. 

This network gathering has limited space, and we will prioritize applicants those from oppressed communities and identities and those that are underrepresented in mainstream journalism.
